An hour after football practice, Rue McNiel collapsed. The 18-year-old had been preparing for the Guthrie Common School District Jaguars' 2020 season. The high broke 100 degrees that day, Aug. 13. When McNiel fell over during a post-practice huddle, he was rushed to the hospital — where he later died from exertional heatstroke symptoms. Heatstroke is the leading cause of preventable death in high school athletics, per the National Federation of State High School Associations, and Texas currently ranks among the worst states for student heat safety protocols.
