One of the things I love about my small town is that we come out to vote in a big way. Since December of 2012, my family has resided in Coppell, a bedroom community in the northwest corner of Dallas County. During the municipal elections that wrapped up on May 6, we had voter turnout rates of 19% in the city of Coppell and 18% in the Coppell Independent School District, which includes most of Coppell plus parts of Irving, Lewisville and Dallas. Some of my neighbors thought those numbers sounded disappointingly low, so I tried to put those statistics in perspective: In Highland Park ISD, 15% of registered voters helped decide who would win a seat on the school board.
